Motorists back drop it plan

Motorists back drop it plan

The Government’s plan to scrap tax discs is backed by drivers, says Motorpoint.

A poll by the car supermarket found 60.6% of drivers backed the decision by chancellor George Osborne to axe the tax disc after over 90 years in favour of an online system. Over 1,500 people participated in the survey.

The tax disc was introduced in 1921 to show motorists had paid Vehicle Excise Duty. But it was revealed in the Autumn Budget that it’s no longer needed as the DVLA and Police now use electronic registration. Under the new online system people can pay road tax by monthly DD to help spread the cost. Motorists without internet access can tax their cars by phone or at apost office.

Mark Carpenter, Motorpoint’s MD said: “The tax disc is part of the fabric of motoring. I’m sure it’ll take some getting used to not having it on our windscreens. But with the widespread use of real-time online systems by the Police and other agencies, the role of the tax disc became largely symbolic. Based on the results of our poll it doesn’t seem many drivers will be sad to see it go.”
