TRW to highlight safety leadership on the road to semi-autonomous vehicle functions at IAA Motor Show 2013

Article by: Martin Scholes on 2013-08-12

TRW is highlighting how its advanced active, passive and integrated safety technologies are laying the foundation to enable semi-autonomous driving at this year’s Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (IAA).

Among the technologies on show are driver assist systems including TRW’s S-CAM 3 video camera and AC1000 radar; intelligent controllers like TRW’s safety domain ECU which can integrate multiple chassis and driver assist functions; actuators including integrated brake control and powered steering; and adaptive occupant safety technologies and improved rear seat safety solutions.

Said Peter Lake, executive vice president sales and business development, TRW Automotive: “The industry’s entering a period of immense change as the market aims to cut the number of road fatalities.

“While advanced technologies are used on luxury vehicles, their fitment is now being spurred across multiple vehicle segments by a combination of regulatory mandates, New Car Assessment Programme ratings, insurance incentives and consumer demand.

“Technologies are becoming increasingly sophisticated, besides warning drivers they’re now intervening in critical situations.  We’ve a technology roadmap to support the move towards semi-autonomous driving: from warning, through assist and to auto-pilot style driving, with the driver in the loop and the systems able to take control of the vehicle in certain conditions.”

TRW will highlight a number of new safety technologies:

S-CAM 3 video camera with six times the processing power of the current S-CAM camera to provide higher performance and several new functions.

TRW’s AC1000 radar family will be suitable for front, rear and side sensing applications and it can detect pedestrians.

Safety Domain ECU to gather, process and act on the increasing levels of data created for high level safety functions

Rear seat passive safety technologies

Lake concluded: “TRW’s been developing these technologies for years in anticipation of this changing landscape. It’s poised for the mass market adoption of advanced safety systems. Work continues to ensure our systems are affordable for all segments and all markets, so everyone benefits.”

Its exhibit at the Frankfurt IAA show in September will bring TRW’s capabilities to life through high tech presentations, demonstrations and simulations. The stand can be found at F20, Hall 8. www.trw.com.
