ACDelco Calls For Focus On Cabin Filters

Article by: Martin Scholes on 2013-08-12

Whilst we’d all probably prefer to be basking or lounging in the sun, the reality, for motorists is they’re likely to spend a deal of time behind the wheel, whether driving for business or pleasure.

It’s against this backdrop, and the necessity to make the driver’s environment as pleasurable as possible, that ACDelco is championing the requirement for garages and workshops to remind customers of the need to change cabin filters regularly.

Says director of ACDelco’s UK and European aftermarket operation, Lee Quinney: “Cabin filters Are a win-win situation. Changing cabin filters helps preserve the integrity of a vehicle’s interior, making life enjoyable for driver and passengers, it’s also a great chance to realise a consistent profit stream that shouldn’t be overlooked.

“There may be nothing new in this, but it’s everyone’s responsibility, manufacturer’s, supplier’s, garage and workshop’s, to drive home to the motorist the need to change cabin filter annually or at 12,000 mile. They should be of concern when summer driving checks. This is something we shall be putting our weight behind.”

Without cabin filters pollen, soot, dust gases, unpleasant odours, reach the interior of the vehicle, with occupants breathing unfiltered air. It’s not only exhaust emissions and industrial pollution that can impair the health of occupants, agricultural substances like fertilizers and liquid manure, plus natural irritants like ozone, can have a negative impact. Health risks are worsened by the “tunnel effect”, caused when vehicles ahead cause an “exhaust tunnel”. Pollutants are drawn into the vehicle interior in concentrated form. In vehicles without filters, concentration levels can be six times higher than at the roadside. Results include headaches, nausea and allergic reactions.

Cabin filters remove pollutants and gases, and protect the air con system and prevent condensation.

Dirt in heating, ventilation and air con systems contaminates the car’s air, has a direct impact on occupant well-being, reduces service life of air con systems, resulting in extra costs.

Poor visibility can cause accidents. Often it’s caused by a filter that wasn’t replaced in line with manufacturer’s’ recommendations. An effective cabin filter makes for good visibility and improves comfort, whilst increasing driver safety.
